Alongside Vista's new security comes a rewrite of how network shares are handled. Has anybody been able to figure out exactly how to allow guest/anonymous access to Windows (SMB) shares? I'm able to share folders and login after providing a Vista user's credentials, but have been unable to share files/folders for guest access. I've seen some posts on the internets about editing some settings in the Admin section of the control panel, but I'm still unable to mount the shares as I want. My real goal is to get Xbox Media Center to be able to read the shares.
Anybody have any experience with this?

I dont have any real help on this one. I do know that user permissions are more complex than XP. But, I am very interested in this thread because I am going to want my XBMC to access a new vista machine I plan to get here soon. Let me know how you figure this one out.

Have you tried creating an "everyone" user and appying the shared folder to that user? Though I havnt messed with the xbox media center and vista nor seen anything related (there is a open post on xboxmediacenter.com, but no posted working configs). Vista and 360 seem to play nice on another note.

Can you see your xbox shares from vista but not see vista shares from xbox or vise versa? Also, check out the last post here, they mention a xbmc program called ccXstream that supposedly solves the problem. And here is says that the latest build of xbmc should work with vista (way down the thread). You have the latest version?

I have created an Everybody user and given them permissions to the folders, but that doesn't work with other PC's or XBMC. Go figure.

If you are in a domain file sharing works like it always has. If you're in a workgroup then the only way I know to allow anyone to access something is to put it in the public folder. Other shares will need a username and password. The public folder allows anonymous access from everyone on the network.
