My goal is to get Vista SP2.

This problem started months ago, apparently, but I didn't notice until a program notified me that microsoft .net frame 3.5 needed to be installed. I tried to install it, and it failed. When I checked the error log, which I forgot to save, it said that 3.0 wasn't available.

So, I go on the internet and search up ways to try and fix the installation. I've downloaded Windows Mr. Fixit, CCcleaner to clean the registry, a .net framework cleanup tool, but to no avail. After using the Mr. Fixit though, my windows updater stopped working. It can no longer find any updates. I tried to do the "upgrade" option with the Vista disk, but I need SP1 to do that, and before my updater stopped working, SP1 didn't even show up. I figure that I need net framework 3.5 and 3.5 sp1 before vista sp1 will show up.

I downloaded Checksur, and checked the logs. The logs will be in the next post.

So it doesn't look good, only thing is I have no idea what to do about it to fix it, short of reinstalling the operating system altogether.

Running Vista Home Premium

Thanks for help, I'll answer any further questions if you need them.

I have an interesting issue with Auto Play. Normally, when I plug in a flash drive I will receive an Auto Play window, no matter what.

However, when a blank drive is inserted, explorer opens and shows the contents (which is nothing).

I would like to see that Auto Play window no matter what.

I am working within a classroom environment with 20 computers, all acting the same - minus my computer.

Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Hi

I have a few video files on my desktop which someone sent me via skype, one been an .avi file from a digital camera, the other been an encoded .mp4 file, in addition to these, I also have quite a few photos on my desktop too, for some reason, a few weeks ago I realised that the .avi file someone sent me had changed it's modified date to the current day and current time, instead of the day it was when I received it, this had been shortly after viewing the photos on the desktop with windows photo gallery, and passing the .avi file while browsing the photos.

Then, last night, I was browsing the desktop again, and i went past the .mp4 file someone had sent me, when i checked my desktop this morning, the mp4 file was the most recently modified file, and the date modified had changed on this also, to 3.13 am this morning, the same time i was browsing the photos on my desktop.

I don't understand what could be causing this, especially with the mp4 file as WPG doesn't even open the mp4 file on my pc, it can't display it, so how could it edit the modified date.

Does anyone know why this happens, I find it very annoying but also rather worrying, I wouldn't like to think something is changing my files or viewing them. :(

Many Thanks

Hi Guys,

A very simple and quick question, I have a laptop which was supplied by a company called Hi-Grade, this laptop has Vista Home Premium on it, It also has office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Publisher); and Kaspersky IS.

Im going to change the OS for a while to Ubuntu, but I don't want to run dual OS's on the laptop. I was also unlucky enough to not be supplied with a reinstallation disk of vista, drivers or office (amongst many other applications) which I am currently downloading. I just want to ask a couple of quick questions relaing to re-installing my legal copies of windows, office, and kaspersky.

Where do I find the product keys?

For vista on the bottom of my laptop there is a nice official windows sticker stating "Vista Home Premium" "Hi-Grade Computer PLC" and a "Product Key". Assuming I unistall windows and reinstall it in a few months, will this product key still work or as its already being used and activated on my laptop now, will problems follow?

I was not supplied the installation disk for office, however I do have a full legal copy of 2007 that states my name on loading, this was set up by Hi-Grade, How do I find out what version office my laptop is running and I assume somewhere in the registry files I could find my product key for this? Is this possible and if so does anyone know where I can find these details.

Thanks In advance. i know its a tall order but Im not going to risk losing all of my legal activated microsoft software if I cant find the keys!

Hey everyone,

I have very frequent freezing on my vista computer. We've had it for maybe 2 years and its been doing this from the very start. Its not my problem, really , since it's my mom's computer. But, I'm down visiting her for a few weeks and I'm forced to use to computer if I need to use one. I figure I'd try and fix it for her as of one of the many things I'm doing for her to make her new marriage smoother.

I don't really have much experience in this area of computers so I was wondering if you would point me in the right direction.

What Happens:

Just randomly the mouse will freeze and the computer will stop all activity for about a minute (maybe more sometimes). I will be able to see what is on the screen it will just pause, with videos I believe it just skips or completely pauses but I don't remember quite well what happens during videos since I haven't used it in a while. Also I use to experience a problem where the computer would freeze up then come back and the internet would be disconnected and there would be nothing you could do to connect it again. Also there would be no indication that the internet is off until about 2 or 3 minutes after the initial freezing. I would then just restart it and have to sign back in and the problem would be fixed for a while. This use to happen just about on the hourly sometimes then other times it might just decide not to do it for an extended amount of time maybe a day.

There are no errors that frequently happen other than that. No messages will pop up and we keep the computer relatively cleaned out.

AVG for virus protection

Thanks, I hope my problem explanation wasn't too vague for helping.
